Rd #5 Kyalami - Isaacs takes over 2nd Place in the SA Championship

Isaacs 38
PS Honda Racing team were looking forward the 5th round of the SA Interfile Superbike Series that was held at Kyalami. The previous round saw Lance Isaacs #38 regain his consistency with a double win for the day and the team arrived at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit full of confidence. Practice went well for the teams two CBR 1000’s of Lance Isaacs fighting off the extremely cold weather but the surprise of the practice was seeing the name Arushen Moodley as fastest for the Friday practice session. The CBR1000R PS Hondas were on a high and looking forward to the race. It was not the same for the teams young guns with Sheridan Morias setting lap times faster than most 1000’s on his ZX6R. Our 600 riders had their work cut out if they were going to find one second to catch Morais. Qualifying was another mild stone for PS Honda Racing which saw the PS Hondas occupying two of the front row positions in both Superbike 1000 and Supersport 600.

Superbike 1000

Egan 81
Blistering cold conditions of 3 degrees, qualifying went well as Isaacs & Moodley both on the front row in 2nd and 3rd positions respectfully using the new Metzeler Race tech tyres. The top four shared the same second all running on the lap record pace, with three Hondas on the front row was another first for Honda in SA. Race 1 would be an extremely close affair with Isaacs leading the race for eight of ten laps when Morais took over on final turn 13 with only one lap to go, the two pulled away from third place by more than 5 seconds and were in the league of their own, 100th of second was the victory margin for Morais over the line with Isaacs finishing in a brilliant second. In doing so Isaacs set a new outright SA Superbike lap record showing the speed of the CBR1000. Moodley bringing home the final podium position on the with a fine 3rd place. Race 2 was even better and we can’t wait for this race to shown on MNET Wesbank Super Series, a two part race with Van Breda having a big get off on turn two and the race having to be restarted, Isaacs took the race to Morais and on lap three pushed his way into the lead in club house bend. The two again stormed away from the chasing pack by more than three seconds in the now eight lap shortened race. The final turn Morais tried hard to take the lead but overshot the final turn, Isaacs doubled back and grabbed a hand full on the Anassis racing prepared CBR1000 the bike stood up on the back wheel with a long wheelie and Isaacs having to feather the throttle to keep the wheel down as the two race side by side towards the finish line. 2000th of a second was the margin of victory for Isaacs. Afterwards Isaacs was penalised 30 seconds for a minor technical infringement, it was found that the clutch lever wire had been put into the rear of the OEM plug instead of the front. It was proved and agreed on by MSA technical consultants that NO gain at all was achieved but the TC felt he had to penalise the team putting Isaacs back in 5th place for the heat. Arushen Moodley was also penalised 30 seconds for jumping the start.

With Isaacs brilliant positions for the day he now takes over 2nd place in the SA Interfile Superbike Championship.

Supersport 600

Peskens 89
Qualifying was great with the team and Martin Paetzold from MP suspension working hard overnight and managed to find point four of a second moving them closer to the super fast ZX6 of Morais. Peskens 2nd and Egan 4th respectfully on the front row of the grid. Race one saw the top four jump off the front and straight into their own battle. Close racing and talent has seen this season field some of the best racing this young gun series has seen to date, but it was Morais who broke away from the chasing pack and left the second place battle to rage between four riders White, Alberts, Quarmby and the PS Honda of James Egan, while the second PS Honda Jacques Peskens held 2nd position for two laps he was pushed wide forcing him to run off the track moving him back to 6th position. Race 2 again Morais was unstoppable and the battle for second continued with White, Alberts, Green and PS Honda Peskens 5th place in an extremely close fought battle for the final two podium positions. The beginning of lap four spelt disaster for Egan on the PS Honda as he went down hard exiting the very fast Wesbank turn, he was taken to hospital and later release with minor cuts and bruising. PS Honda lady rider Janine Mitchell had a solid ride beating the boys in the final bunch. A tough day for the PS Honda young guns.

Moodley 21
Brad Anassis “it was a tough weekend, I think the cold weather plaid it’s toll and the grip levels got to Egan, I am just glad he is OK. We struggled with the 600’s but Lance brought the spirit right back with his determination to take the fight to the number one rated rider in SA, both he and Arushen proved that the Honda is capable of winning and setting the pace as the lap record showed. We will go home and use the long one month break to analyse the situation and to try our best to come up with a winning solution for our young gunsâ€

Catch up with the PS Honda Team at their home track Zwartkops on August the 15th for round 6 of the SA Championships.
