Rd #6 Zwartkops - PS Honda Racing wins @ Zwartkops
PS Honda Win SA superbike round six. 1st Lance Isaacs PS Honda CBR1000RR & 3rd Arushen Moodley PS Honda CBR1000RR. The Interfile South African Superbike Championship is passing the halfway point for 2009 and Portable Shade Honda Racing is showing they have what it takes to challenge for the championship, now only a few points behind the current leader and in striking distance. Round six was hosted by Zwartkops Raceway 5 km outside. PS Honda is based only a 15 min from the track so it’s the teams home race. Many local supporters turned up to support the Pretoria based Anassis Racing squad. The track is the shortest on the national calendar at only 2.1km long, with not many turns it is extremely hard to pass and a front row start is crucial.
Superbike

Practice went to plan with the team leading the time sheets. Martin Paetzold from MP supplied the team with all new suspension parts and it was working. Qualifying was cut ‘Short’ and excuse the pun when Michael Short crashed on the tracks fastest turn and leaving his bike in a dangerous place so the COC cut the practice BUT only five min had been run and the PS Honda boys were only on their second flying lap of a planned five, leaving Lance and Arushen with very poor times for starting positions. The team has offered to assist young Michael Short a new comer to superbike racing on the national scene. Unfortunately the crash in qualifying left him with a broken bike and he could not continue for the day. In only his first SA national superbike event Michael put his CBR1000RR onto the second row.
Race 1, Lance had a poor start determined to make up for the qualifying being cut short he dumped the clutch and the bike wheelied off the line leaving him 7th into turn one, his job was now going to be tough, but he put his head down and picked them off one by one until he hit second position with 5 laps to go. Breaking the lap record in the process he came within one second of challenging Morais for first place. Arushen had to fight just as hard from the second row and forced his CBR 1000RR into a fine 5th place for heat one.
Race 2, and both the PS Honda riders had to start from the second row, but it was Isaacs day as he quickly made mince meat of the field carving his way to the front. He only challenge came from Clinton Sellars who had only completed one lap in heat one thus having a fresh new tire, he made the going tough for Isaacs as the two pulled 5 seconds clear of third place and again Isaacs being the fastest man on the track and the only rider for the weekend to dip into the 1.01 second barrier. Morais crashed on lap seven and all Isaacs had to do was bring it home to take overall 1st for the day but he wanted the win badly and the two race side by side across the line. Arushen Moodley rounded off the podium with a fine 3rd for the day, giving PS Honda racing an almost perfect podium. Greg Gidlenhuis on the Race Nation CBR 1000RR Honda gave Honda the perfect day by taking 2nd position, making history for Honda and a clean sweep of the superbike podium.
Superbike Results
1st Lance Isaacs - PS Honda CBR 1000RR
2nd Greg Gidenhuis - CBR 1000RR
3rd Arushen Moodley - PS Honda CBR 1000RR
Spectators were treated to an awesome display of racing with a very competitive field. The pressure is definitely on at this point in the championship... as it showed with current SA champion ‘Morais’ #32 crashing out of heat two while trying to catch the fast CBR1000RR.
Supersport
A tough weekend for the PS young guns, but in the end Peskens brought home the first Honda clamming valuable points in the manufacturers championship. MP tried new front suspension components and the riders could just not get the bikes to steer. Practice saw the Egan & Peskens at the lower end of the time sheet. Friday eve some serious work was done and on Sat morning Peskens put his PS CBR600RR onto the front row with Egan on the second row. Janine Mitchell put in some blistering laps bettering her fastest Friday lap by two seconds.
Race 1, Morais again ran away and the fight was on for second place, Peskens worked hard from a poor start passing four riders banging his way into second position on the short and tight track, he lead the chasing pack for nine laps, but two laps from the end his boot broke and kept hooking the gear lever, his lap times dropped by 2 seconds per lap slipping him back to 4th for the heat. Egan was on the losing end as young Brent Harren crash behind him taking him out in the fall. Janine had her race face and again put in some fast laps making her the fastest lady racer on the track.
Race 2, Again Peskens showed he has what it takes to become a future champion with a hard fought third place for the heat and overall 4th for the day. Egan recovering from a crash in heat one finished in a tough 10th place. Mitchell came home first lady rider for the day.
Brad Anassis “We are only half way there and there isn’t much in it going into the 7th round. By no means can anyone afford to relax. However, the team is stronger than ever and everyone knows what is needed going forward. I have every confidence in my team and we will arrive in Phakisa as focused as ever on our objective; being number 1.â€
